Become an Auditor

 

Enform offers two certification tracks for safety auditors. The first track is for Internal (Maintenance) Auditors that perform maintenance audits only for the company with whom they are employed. An Internal (Maintenance) Auditor cannot conduct an audit on behalf of any other company or sell their services as a consultant. The second track is for External Auditors that may be hired by companies to conduct their external safety audits. As such, the External Auditor track has greater focus on the demonstration of a professional level of education and experience.

 

Track 1: Internal (Maintenance) Auditor

In order to qualify as an internal auditor for Enform, the following qualifications and processes must be met: In order to qualify as an external auditor for Enform, the following qualifications and processes must be met:
Qualifications

1. Be employed on a full-time basis with the company that you will be conducting audits for.

Qualifications

1. Hold a certificate, diploma, or degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or equivalent.

2. A minimum of five years experience as a safety professional in the last ten years

The following steps must be taken in order to become certified as an Internal Auditor: The following steps must be taken in order to become certified as an External Auditor:

Process

  1. Complete Internal Auditor Application and submit to Enform for review two months prior to the desire course date

  2. Completion of Enform's two-day Safety Program Development Course

    - This two-day course must be completed before you can register for the 5-day Auditor course.

  3. Once the application is approved, proof of registration for the Certified Health and Safety Auditors Program must be received within four months of the approval date.

  4. Completion of Enform's five-day Certified Health and Safety Auditors program within one year of the approval date. A final mark of at least 80% must be achieved on the final exam.

  5. Review and sign acceptance of the Auditor Code of Ethics/Conflict of Interest Guidelines prior to starting the Student Qualification Audit

  6. Submit Qualifications Audit to Enform within six months of Certified Health and Safety Auditors Program.

  7. Applicants who do not register for the Certified Health and Safety Auditors Program (CHSA) course within four months, or do not complete the CHSA course within one year, are considered to have abandoned the process and much reapply.

  8. Effective January 1, 2011; the online Petroleum Industry Auditor Seminar (PIAS) course will have to be taken prior to students registering for the five day Certified Health and Safety Auditors Program. This is an e-Learning module that must be taken online.

 

Process

  1. Completion of Enform's two-day Safety Program Development Course

  2. Complete External Auditor Application and Professional Reference Forms along with all other supporting documentation, such as diplomas and certificates and submit to Enform for review two months before the desired course date.

  3. Once the application is approved, an applicant must register for the Certified Health and Safety Auditor Program (CHSA), five-day course within four months of the approval date. The actual course must be completed within one year of the approval date. Applicants who do not register for the CHSA course within four months, or do not complete the CHSA course within one year, are considered to have abandoned the process and must reapply.

  4. Applicants must complete the five-day Certified Health and Safety Auditors Program and achieve at least 80% on the final exam.

  5. Review and sign acceptance of the Auditor Code of Ethics/Conflict of Interest Guidelines prior to starting the Student Qualification Audit

  6. Submit Student Qualification Audit to Enform for review within six months of completing the CHSA course

  7. Completion to Enform's Petroleum Safety Training (PST) orientation, including all optional modules.

  8. Effective January 1, 2011; the online Petroleum Industry Auditor Seminar (PIAS) course will have to be taken prior to students registering for the five-day CHSA program. This is an e-Learning module that must be taken online.
     

 


Transition from Internal to External Auditor:

The following steps must be taken in order to move from being an internal auditor to a Certified External Auditor:

 

1. Complete External Auditor Application and supporting Professional Reference Forms and submit to Enform for review.

 

2. Have references complete the Professional Reference Forms and submit to Enform.

 

3. Complete Enform's Petroleum Safety Training (PST) orientation (CSTS training will be accepted as equivalent)

 

Existing Internal (maintenance) auditors who took their auditor training prior to November 17, 2008, must also take a one day Petroleum Industry Auditor Seminar to be certified to perform external COR audits for Enform.


Maintaining your Auditor Certification

 

Enform Certified Auditors are required to maintain their auditor certification by:

 

1. Completing the Certified Health and Safety Auditor Renewal once every three years.

 

If your auditor certification has expired, the standard allows up to 6 months from the expiry to complete the Auditor Renewal course however, the standard does not allow any new audit registration until recertification is complete.

 

2. Completing 2 audits or maintenance audit options in the previous 3 year certification cycle.

 

If this requirement has not been met, the auditor will be required to conduct and submit a regular COR audit within 6 months of the Auditor Renewal course before recertification can be granted.
