Become an Auditor

Enform offers two certification tracks for safety auditors. The first track is for Internal Auditors who are intending to perform Internal (maintenance) audits for the company with whom they are full-time employees. An Internal (Maintenance) Auditor cannot conduct an audit on behalf of any other company.

The second track is for External Auditors who may be hired by companies to conduct External (Certification or Re-Certification) audits. The External Auditor track has additional educational and experience-level requirements.

Track 1: Internal (Maintenance) Auditor

Prerequisite

  1. Be employed on a full-time basis with the company that you will be auditing

Process

  • Complete Enform's two-day Safety Program Development Course
    *** If an applicant meets the requirements to become an external auditor, then they are not required to complete Safety Program Development
  • Complete the Internal Auditor Application form and submit it to Enform for review two months prior to the desired course date
  • Register for the Certified Health and Safety Auditor Program (CHSAP) within four months of the approval date
  • Complete Enform's 5-day CHSAP within one year of the approval date. You must achieve at least 80% on the final exam
  • Review and sign acceptance of Enform's Certified Auditor's Agreement
  • Submit a Qualifications Audit to Enform within six months of completing the CHSAP. Your Quality Assurance review score must achieve at least 80%
Track 2: External Auditor

Prerequisite

  1. Hold a professional designation in health and safety, such as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or other Approved Professional Designations.
    OR
    Hold a certificate, diploma, or degree in Occupational Health and Safety from one of the eligible programs. View a list of the eligible programs
  2. External applicants must also have a minimum of five years experience as a well-rounded safety professional within the last ten years
  3. Complete the online Petroleum Safety Training (PST) orientation course (effective January 1, 2011)

Process

Complete and submit the External Auditor Application form for review two months prior to the desired course date (with the relevant certificates or documentation (the Professional Reference Forms that must be submitted with the application are available as a download on page two (2) of the application form)

Register for the Certified Health and Safety Auditors Program within four months of the approval date

Complete Enform's 5-day CHSAP within one year of the approval date. You must achieve at least 80% on the final exam

Review and sign acceptance of Enform's Certified Auditor's Agreement

Submit a Qualifications Audit to Enform within six months of completing the CHSAP. Your Quality Assurance (QA) review score must achieve at least 80%

Applicants who do not register for the CHSAP course within four months, or who do not complete the CHSAP course within one year, are considered to have abandoned the process and must reapply.

Transitioning from Internal to External Auditor:

  1. Complete and submit the External Auditor Application form with relevant certificates or documentation (the Professional Reference Forms that must be submitted with the application are available as a download on page two (2) of the application form).
  2. Complete Enform's Petroleum Safety Training (PST) orientation (CSTS training will be accepted as equivalent)

Maintaining Your Auditor Certification

Enform Certified Auditors are required to maintain their auditor certification by:

  1. Completing the Certified Health and Safety Auditor Renewal once every three years.
    If your auditor certification has expired, the standard allows up to 6 months from the expiry to complete the Auditor Renewal course however, the standard does not allow any new audit registration until recertification is complete.
  2. Completing two audits or maintenance audit options in the previous three year certification cycle.
    If this requirement has not been met, the auditor will be required to conduct and submit a regular COR audit within 6 months of the Auditor Renewal course before recertification can be granted.
