The Controlling Chemical Hazards (CCH) guideline is completed and ready for download or purchase!
The upstream oil and gas industry uses and produces a variety of chemical products on its work sites. To create safer, healthier work sites, everyone involved needs to raise their awareness of the specific hazards presented by chemicals in the upstream industry. If you work in this industry, you need to be aware of chemical hazards and your role and responsibilities in controlling these hazards.
There are four items available through this project.
GUIDELINE
This guideline was written to help you get there. This guideline adopts a management system approach to controlling chemical hazards. This approach assumes that managing and controlling the risks associated with hazardous chemicals begins long before any worker actually handles or disposes of these chemicals. In this approach, the task of managing and controlling chemical hazards falls on a whole string of companies involved in any given upstream project or program. Everyone along the way has a role to play, from project planners to supervisors and workers. This guideline is a large document which can be downloaded for free in whole or in part (see Controlling Chemical Hazards guideline). Please note the use of colour was instrumental in our design and it is recommended that the document be printed in colour – or purchased through our e-store (Enform Connect).
WORKER FLIP GUIDE
The worker’s flip guide is designed by workers for workers. It includes the information from the guideline that is directly applicable to your worker, and housed in a manageable mini-flip format. Due to its design shape this document is not available for free download but it can be purchased through our e-store (Enform Connect).
GUIDANCE SHEETS
Guidance sheets provide excellent information on various chemicals, tasks, controls, and safety. They can be used to educate the workforce, stimulate discussion during toolbox / tailgate / startup meetings, and assist in controlling various chemical hazards.
The sheets are divided into five topics and designed for workers (green), supervisors (red), planners (blue), and all participants (orange). They are available within the guideline (see Appendix 4 – Guidance Sheet Index and Appendix 5 – Sample Guidance Sheets) or they can be purchased separately in full colour and unbound for easy use through our e-store.
EXPOSURE CONTROL PLAN TEMPLATE (for drilling fluids)
The Exposure Control Plan (ECP) template was the first piece of the project to be designed and available for free download. This template walks you through how to design and draft your own ECP on drilling fluids. The template is available within the guideline (see Appendix 7 – Exposure Control Plan) or can be downloaded for free on its own.

The Controlling Chemical Hazards Interactive Tool
To assist companies in selecting the appropriate approaches to controlling chemical hazards Enform has developed an interactive web-based tool for the upstream oil and gas industry. In real time, by entering your own chemical information, you can output guidance sheets to direct your specific control approaches. Convenient and fast, this tool will be essential as you move from location to location and adjusting for different chemical mixtures. It is the first of its kind in the industry and will provide essential information – at your fingertips.
This web based tool can be accessed here
